Our family lives in SW Washington, which is the north side of the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. Some say we're the "Suburb of Portland."
Along the shoreline of the Columbia River are luxurious condos and magnificent homes and minutes away are gorgeous homes on acreages where you can ride your own horses or raise llamas! Twenty+ minutes slightly northeast of downtown Vancouver is Hockinson, where you can drive by wild deer living on private property. In another direction you’ll even find a couple homes housing the family CAMEL! I'm not kidding! Horses, mules, llamas, alpacas, camels, wild deer, we have them all..and its wonderful.
Concerned parents continue to move here from out-of-state because of our schools. They appreciate the Southwest Washington School Districts because they are not so huge that kids get lost in the system. Our schools are able to focus on children's academics and well-being. Taxes: Oregon has no sales tax and Washington has no State Income Tax. In some cases it’s a “wash” and in others it’s very economical to live AND work in Washington.
One fabulous citizen group works day and night for the citizens of this State trying to keep our taxes as low as possible and make our State Government accountable. The latest is http://www.ReduceCongestion.org . Several years ago they worked night and day to get an initiative on the ballot that reduced our high vehicle license fees to $30 per vehicle yearly which has saved Washingtonians hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years without one scare tactic actually happening. People say "Vancouver" just like they say "Los Angeles"; the name means a lot of places & areas. Of course, we're a lot smaller and can get from one end of Clark County to the other probably less than 50 minutes depending on traffic. There are a couple maps linked on my site explaining the areas, zip codes & other tidbits of information to make it easier for you when you come to visit or live here.
